Zakynthos has around five hundred churches, monasteries and chapels, which is a large number considering its’ size and population.
It held high the beliefs of Christianity and a strong faith in the Orthodox Church.
It was this faith, which helped Zakynthos and its people fight against the deadly plagues, the catastrophic earthquakes, the raids from pirates and tribes of barbarians, and the occupations of various conquerors.
The ecclesiastical treasures were of utmost value to the islanders: the silver and gold utensils, libraries of holy books, icons and hagiographies by famous Eptanisian artists, churches and bell-towers of great architectural beauty with sculptured décor and temples carved from wood.
Today there is still a rich cultural and ecclesiastical inheritance for every visitor to admire.
