VARIOUS TYPES OF CULTIVATION
The ground of Zakynthos is fertile and has plenty of water. The climate is damp and warm, suitable for the growth and cultivation of many products. Ancient coins with the word “ZAKYNΘΙΟΝ” show a young man holding a basket of fruit. Plinios describes the land of Zakynthos as sufficiently fertile, so does Stravonas, whereas Homer called it “Yliessa” which means ‘forest land’
Apart from the vineyards and olive groves that make up the major part of the islands cultivation, there are many citrus trees. In smaller quantities there are almond, walnut, pomegranate, pear, quince and pine. Vegetables are in abundance, such as celery, leeks, parsley, lettuce, beetroot, cabbage, potatoes, onion, garlic, cauliflower and artichokes.
The cultivation of summer fruit crops and garden vegetables is more systematic. These include cherries, peaches, plums, figs, honeydew melons, water melons, tomatoes, cucumber, beans, aubergines, okra, peppers and many more. The Zakynthian honeydew melon is renown for its unique taste.
- You will learn about the above cultivations in previous programmes, grape, honey and olives.
